This year, there was an unique opportunity to interact with the man himself, the Chief Technology Officer of Cloud Foundry – Chip Childers – and listen to him.

In the morning, Vishnu Prasad Hegde from SAP officially started the day with crisp welcome address. Keynote Speaker, Chip Childers took over the stage and provided a clear-cut picture of Cloud Foundry as on today and its relevance in current business market scenario. Chip described the Cloud Foundry evolution and neccessity of building the CF community. The ethos of CF Community are: - Velocity - Interoperability - Innovation

The enterprise readiness of Cloud Foundry depends upon: - Security - Integration - Scalability - Great Developer Experience

Cloud Foundry is used by 61% large enterprise worldwide. Cloud Foundry Eco-system is the world's largest open source marketplace with 4900+ services.

Chip also discuss about the market trends and future aspects of Cloud Foundry.

While discussing about Cloud Native Platforms (Cloud Foundry, OpenShift and Kubernetes), Chip explained in details on: CaaS (Container as a Service : Use cases - Data Services, ISV packaged S/W, Machine Learning Model Hosting) PaaS (Platform as a Service : Use cases - MicroServices, Web Applications, focused on Custom Development) FaaS (Function as a Service : Function-level deployment of event based logic, "Glue" or the scripting framework for cloud-scale computing).

Later, Srinivasa Vasu - Pivotal Architect, in his “A Tale of Two Runtimes” topic, has shown an excellent demo on two runtimes - Application Runtime and Container Runtime.

Now, developers can use these runtimes for their purpose built environments.

An eminent contributor of Cloud Foundry Community, Bernd Krannich from SAP, presented the possible future of Platform-as-a-Service. He provided how business can leverage both - Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes.

Bernd invested more time on the requirement of Service Manager ("Peripli") which can manage

- common catalog of services between Cloud Foundry, many Kubernetes clusters, etc.

- consumption of services in Cloud Foundry, Kubernetes, others

- sharing of service instances.

Apart from sharing SAP Cloud Platform's vision, Bernd also shared details on some projects where SAP alone and along with Pivotal, IBM, RedHat, etc., SAP is working on Cloud Foundry.

"Gardener" : Create/Manage K8s clusters homogeneously on various Cloud infrastructure

"Istio" : Connect, Secure, Control and Observe Services

"Knative" : Kubernetes-based platform to build, deploy and manage modern serverless workload

"Fissile++" : Containerized Cloud Foundry Control Panel

Srinivasan Nanduri from IBM talked about IBM Cloud Foundry Enterprise Environment(CFEE); using CFEE, one can create and manage isolated environments for hosting Cloud Foundry applications exclusively for the enterprise. CFEE also provides

- self-service deployment

- elastic consumption

- rapid provisioning

- access to CF admin operations

- integrations with IBM Cloud Services, including Watson AI.

After this, Visnu Prasad Hegde, SAP moderated a panel discussion on "The future of Cloud-Native development and platforms" where architects/experts from Pivotal, IBM, SAP and Chip Childers share their valuable opinions.

In last session, SAP Archiects, Sreeram Rajendran and Sivaram Subbiah had presented an "Overview on User Account Management and Multi-tenancy" where they elaborated the possibilities of reusing the re-usable resources.

They also explained the possible challenges for the same and how to overcome the issues.

The full day session was pretty informative & useful. The anchor Sandeep made it more enthusiastic and interactive by conducting quizes.
